A gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing approximately 50 people and wounding at least 53 others early Sunday in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
The shooting comes amid LGBT Pride Month, which features major events in cities across the U.S.
The shooter, identified by various media outlets as Omar Mateen, was shot and killed by police, according to Orlando police chief John Mina. The shooter appeared to have “leanings towards” Islamic terrorism, Ron Hopper, assistant special agent in charge of Orlando’s FBI bureau, told CNN.
“It’s appears he was organized and well-prepared,” the chief said at a press conference.
