The Washington Post reports that the leaders of the US, Canada, and Mexico will jointly pledge to set an aggressive new target for clean energy on Wednesday. President Obama will travel to Ottawa later this week to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto as part of this year’s North American Leaders Summit, and is expected there to announce this joint pledge between the three countries to source half of their collective electricity with clean energy by 2025.
About 59% of Canada’s electricity already comes from hydropower, with another 16% coming from hydropower, so the country has already surpassed this target, which will be more of a challenge for its neighbors to the South, which rely heavily on fossil fuels for much of their electricity supply.
