According to the first Australian Renewable Energy Index, Australia’s renewable energy sector is close to matching national household power consumption. The country currently produces enough electricity from renewable sources to run 70 percent of homes – and that percentage is projected to increase. The report, produced by Green Energy Markets, finds that the sector will generate enough power to run 90 percent of homes once various wind and solar energy projects are completed.
Although Australia’s renewable energy sector makes up 18.8 percent of total electrical output (beyond just households), clean energy production continues to expand. Analysts believe the sector is on track to meet the federal government’s renewable energy target of 20 percent of total generation by 2020.
