Obama Administration Gives $500M to UN Climate Change Fund

With only days left in office, the Obama administration announced a $500M contribution to the Green Climate Fund, bring the U.S.'s total contribution to date to the UN climate fund to $1 billion.

On Tuesday, the Obama administration announced a $500 million contribution to the UN’s Green Climate Fund, BBC News reports. This tranche brings the total U.S. contributions to date to $1 billion, short of the $3 billion Obama pledged in 2014 to help the world’s poorest countries adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

John Kirby, the State Department official who announced the contribution, said, “This is an investment that had been long planned.”
