VICE News reports on a major announcement from Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Alibaba Chief Jack Ma, and other corporate leaders to form a $1 billion investment fund for clean energy technologies. Breakthrough Energy Ventures is planned to run for 20 years, and will focus on technologies that produce energy without producing emissions.
The fund was created out of last year’s Breakthrough Energy Coalition, “a Gates-led multibillion-dollar initiative launched last year to mobilize global business and government leaders on climate change,” Noah Kulwin writes for VICE News. The fund will not only focus on traditional clean energy projects, but also so-called “breakthrough innovations,” in an effort to find the “energy miracle” Bill and Melinda Gates mention in their 2016 Annual Letter.
