‘Child marriages rampant’

A recent survey by the United Nations Population Fund finds that Zimbabwe was among 41 nations with the highest rates of child marriages.

The Zimbabwe National Statistical Agency (ZIMSTAT) has released damning figures showing rampant child marriages in its 2014 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) report.

According to the report, about one third of women between the ages of 20 and 49 years got married when they were under the age of 18 years, while about a quarter of Zimbabwean girls are currently married or in unions similar to marriage.

The Constitution of Zimbabwe provides the marriageable and consent age as 18 years for both boys and girls.
