On Friday, European Union states agreed on a fast-track, unanimous ratification of the Paris Agreement, putting the accord up for final approval by the European Parliament and ministers next week, Reuters reports.
As Alissa de Carbonnel reports for Reuters, “The agreement by environment ministers from all 28 member states is a rare political breakthrough for the EU at a time of discord over the migration crisis and uncertainty after Britain’s vote to leave the bloc.”
The European Union accounts for about 12% of the world’s emissions, and their joining would give the climate accord the numbers it needs to meet its thresholds to enter into legal force.
