The state of Massachusetts is considering adding a new wind plant off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, according to Bobby Magill of Climate Central. The deal would partner offshore wind specialist Deepwater Wind with Elon Musk’s battery storage technology from Tesla. The companies hope to generate 144 megawatts of energy, enough to power 80,000 homes. Massachusetts is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making the state energy efficient.

Tesla’s batteries are often used for solar energy, so the offshore windfarm will be a new challenge for the company. Similar projects have already made an impact on New England’s energy sources. One offshore windfarm forced a diesel-fueled power plant to close last year. This plan is not yet approved and will be studies by the Massachusetts Department of Energy.
