President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will withdraw the United States from the landmark 2015 Paris Climate Accord, Michael Shear reports for The New York Times. The decision comes after weeks of deliberation, as the President received conflicting advice from his divided inner circle.
The President’s decision to withdraw stemmed from concerns for the American economy and energy industry, but large American corporations, politicians from both sides of the aisle, and foreign governments alike urged him to keep the U.S. part of the deal. The President’s speech celebrated the withdrawal, lauding the “America First” ideology that Mr. Trump used on the campaign trail, but those disappointed in the decision, including former President Obama, made their displeasure known.
