Why The UN SDGs Are Critical For Climate

A call to focus on getting the wheels that already exist rolling.

Attend a major climate or development event these days, and you can’t help but hear about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“With the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, you have opened the opportunity to meet the climate-change challenge to a great extent by fulfilling the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development,” said Christiana Figueres, outgoing executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, at last month’s climate talks in Bonn.

“My ideal goal will be that every [company] will run its business plan and its objectives along the Sustainable Development Goals — that we would actually publish our annual reports to show what contributions we make to the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Unilever CEO Paul Polman at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
