Ethiopian Refugee Family Reunites in Utah after 6 Years Apart

Daho Mamesani and his siblings were separated from their mother in their home of Ethiopia when she was jailed as political prisoner in 2011. They were reunited in September in Utah.

WEST VALLEY CITY — Fourteen-year-old Sorate Mamesani loves to shout “Mom!” through her family’s apartment, just so she can hear her mother answer.

It’s a sound she didn’t hear for almost six years.

Sorate and her four siblings, ranging in age from 9 to 17, were separated from their mother in their home of Ethiopia when she was jailed as a political prisoner in 2011.
