The World’s Largest Floating Solar Farm is Producing Energy Atop a Former Coal Mine

The 40-megawatt Clean Power Plant Could Help Power More Than 15,000 Homes.

The Chinese city of Huainan is the ultimate example of a renewable energy transformation. When a coal mine flooded and became a lake, the city installed the world’s largest floating solar farm in its place.

Set to power over 15,000 homes, the new 40-megawatt farm consists of 120,000 polar panels covering an area of more than 160 American football fields. Although floating solar farms are more expensive than typical solar plants, they do offer advantages, such as decreasing water evaporation and utilizing an otherwise unused surface. The transition provides a powerful example of China’s commitment to renewable energy.
