Last updated: September 2013.

This Privacy Policy describes the privacy practices we at the United Nations Foundation (the “UN Foundation”, “we”, or “us”) have adopted regarding how we collect, use, and disclose information we obtain about you through your use of our websites at www.unfoundation.org, www.unfoundation.com, www.shotatlife.org, www.climasphere.org, www.globaldaily.org and any other of our websites, email messages, mobile applications, and other software containing a link to this Privacy Policy (collectively, our “Sites”).

By using any of our Sites, you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Policy and consent to the use of your information as described in this Privacy Policy.  If you do not agree to this Privacy Policy, please do not use the Sites.  This Privacy Policy does not govern our use of any information you provide to us when you call us, write to us, or communicate with us in any manner other than through the Sites.

European Union and Other Non-U.S. Users

Because the Internet is global, information about you that we collect or that you submit may be transferred to, processed in, and held in countries (including the United States) other than the one in which you reside.  YOU EXPRESSLY CONSENT TO OUR PROCESSING OF YOUR NAME AND OTHER INFORMATION BY WHICH SOMEONE COULD PERSONALLY IDENTIFY YOU (WHICH WE REFER TO IN THIS PRIVACY POLICY COLLECTIVELY AS “PERSONAL INFORMATION“) ACCORDING TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY.  YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY BE PROCESSED BY US IN THE COUNTRY WHERE IT WAS COLLECTED AND IN THE UNITED STATES OR ANOTHER COUNTRY.  THE UNITED STATES LAWS REGARDING PROCESSING OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY BE LESS STRINGENT THAN THE LAWS IN YOUR COUNTRY.

What Personal Information does the UN Foundation collect on its Sites?

  • Mobile Applications: If you use one of our mobile applications, we may request your email address or other contact information
  • Surveys and Quizzes: If you participate in a survey or quiz, we may ask for contact information (such as name and postal address), demographic information (such as zip code and age level), as well as the other information requested by the survey or quiz.  Participation in surveys and quizzes is completely voluntary.
  • Donations to the UN Foundation: If you make a donation, we request information on our donation form.  We typically ask for contact information (like name and address) and financial information (like credit card number, expiration date).

How does the UN Foundation use the Personal Information that it collects?

The UN Foundation may use the Personal Information it collects (1) to provide you with email newsletters and other information, products, and services that you have requested; (2) to contact you (by email or otherwise) regarding the UN Foundation, our campaigns, and our Sites; (3) to process donation payments, including contacting you in case we have trouble processing a payment; (4) to maintain and improve our Sites; (5) to keep records related to our Sites; and (6) for other purposes identified on portions of our Sites where the information is collected.

How does the UN Foundation protect your Personal Information?

Access to Personal Information stored by us is restricted to those in our organization and our service providers that have a business need for such access.  However, no security system is foolproof, and we cannot fully eliminate security risks with respect to your Personal Information.  As a result, while your privacy is very important to us, we cannot fully ensure that your Personal Information will not be disclosed to third parties.  If applicable law imposes any non-disclaimable duty with respect to your Personal Information, you agree that the standard used to measure our compliance with that duty will be one of intentional misconduct.

We have no obligation to retain your Personal Information, and may dispose of your Personal Information at any time without notifying you, subject to the restrictions of applicable law.  If you wish to keep a copy of your Personal Information, you must keep your own, separate back-up records.

How does the UN Foundation share the Personal Information it collects?

(a)  Third Party Service Providers.  From time to time, we may enter into relationships with third party service providers to help with certain aspects of our operations, which may require disclosure of your Personal Information to them.  For example, we may use a third party to: (i) send information to you or otherwise communicate with you (via telephone, email or mail) about us or our Sites, such as in our newsletters; (ii) process and collect payment from your credit card (such as when you make a donation); (iii) help us collect data relating to your use of our Sites; or, (iv) perform other work that we may need to outsource.  In those circumstances, we require that they use your Personal Information only as reasonably necessary to perform those services, and we require that they maintain the confidentiality of your Personal Information in a manner consistent with this Privacy Policy.

(b) Public Information.  There may be areas of our Sites (e.g., reviews, comments, blogs and online forums) in which you are able to post information, including Personal Information, that will be available to all other users of our Sites.  By choosing to use these areas, you understand and agree that anyone may access, use, and disclose any information that you post to those areas.

(c)  Special Disclosure Scenarios.  Notwithstanding anything else in this Privacy Policy, we reserve the right, and you hereby expressly authorize us, to share any Personal Information: (1) in response to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process, or to establish, protect, or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims; (2) if we believe it is necessary in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, fraud, or situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person or property; (3) if we believe it is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding significant abuse of the Sites or the Internet in general (such as voluminous spamming, denial of service attacks, or attempts to compromise the security of information); (4) to our affiliated organizations (in which case we will require such entities to honor this Privacy Policy); and (5) if we are acquired by or merge with another organization.

Cookies

A cookie is a piece of data stored on your hard drive containing information about you.  Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any Personal Information while on the Sites.  Once you close your browser, the cookie simply terminates. For instance, by setting a cookie on our Sites, you may be able to access quiz results or other interactive features made possible only through the implementation of cookies.  Cookies can also enable us to track and target your interests to enhance the experience on our Sites, but we do not link information collected by cookies to your Personal Information.

You can set your browser to accept all cookies, notify you when you receive a cookie, or to reject any cookies you receive.  Please consult your browser’s help section to learn more.  You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, but in that case, some portions of our Sites may not operate properly.

Third Party Data Collection

When third parties help us to collect data relating to your use of our Sites, or when third parties advertise or display other content on or through our Sites, they may set their own cookies to collect that data.  In those circumstances, those third party cookies and the use of such data by those third parties are governed by the privacy policies of those third parties, not this Privacy Policy.  We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third parties before you submit any information to them.  We are not responsible for the privacy practices of any third parties, including but not limited to those that process online credit card transactions.

Log Files and Other Non-Personal Information

(a)  IP Addresses.  The UN Foundation uses the IP address from your Internet connection to analyze trends, administer the Sites, track users’ movements, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. We do not share IP addresses linked to any Personal Information, nor do we share IP addresses or Personal Information in a manner that is intended to enable your IP address to be linked to your Personal Information.

(b)  Sponsors and Advertisers.  From time to time, we may share anonymous data collected about you to enable our third party sponsors or advertisers who serve advertisements on the Sites to deliver advertisements that will be relevant to you.  We do not share any such information, however, in a manner that is intended to enable the advertiser to personally identify you.

Health Information

The Sites are not intended for storage, display, or transmission of any “protected health information” as defined in the federal regulations implementing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), or any similar state or federal law.  Accordingly, the privacy and security provisions of this Privacy Policy should not be interpreted to incorporate any data protection standards of the HIPAA regulations.

The Sites may contain links to other websites (such as social networking services).  Please be aware that we are not responsible for the privacy practices of other websites.  We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our Sites to read the privacy statements of each and every website or mobile application that collects Personal Information.  This Privacy Policy does not apply to Personal Information collected by other websites.

Children’s Privacy

The UN Foundation encourages parents and guardians to take an active role in their children’s online activities and interests, and to be careful and sensible about the privacy of minors when sharing Personal Information through the Sites.  The Sites are not intended for use by children under the age of 13.

Correcting/Updating/Removing Personal Information

If your Personal Information changes (such as your zip code or email address), or if you wish to remove your Personal Information, the UN Foundation will endeavor to provide a way to correct, update, or remove the Personal Information your provided to us.  This can usually be done at the member information page or by emailing our staff atinquiries@un.org.  We will use our commercially reasonable efforts to fulfill your update request in a timely manner.  We may keep a record of all information that is changed or deleted, and we may determine what types of information may be changed or deleted.  For example, if we are required to keep track of certain kinds of transactions, you may be prevented from changing or deleting information relevant for those transactions.  Even if we delete or change your information from our ‘live’ database, it may still be stored on other databases (including those kept for archival purposes). We are not responsible for updating or removing information about you from the databases of any third parties.

Please note that if you delete certain information, you may not be able to use certain features of our Sites in the future without re-submitting that information.

Email Scams

Several deceptive emails claiming to be from or associated with the United Nations Foundation, Ted Turner and Timothy Wirth are circulating on the Internet.  These emails often include our logo, photos, links, or other information from our Sites.

Some emails claim the recipient has won a lottery or other prize and request detailed personal information or a payment of some kind in order to receive the winnings. Some mention other foundations and organizations based in London and the United Kingdom, none of which we believe are a part of these scams.  Other emails direct recipients to Web sites that promise large returns on investments and claim a portion of returns will be donated to the foundation.

The sources and contents of these emails, Web sites, and accompanying materials are in no way associated with the United Nations Foundation, Mr. Turner or Mr. Wirth.  For your own protection, we strongly recommend not responding to emails making such claims.

The UN Foundation has reported, and will continue to report, these deceptive spam emails to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  For more information about the FTC’s efforts against deceptive spam, please visit www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/spam/report.html.  For more information about the IC3, please visit www.ic3.gov/.  For information on the FBI, please visit www.fbi.gov/, or contact your local FBI office.

You can also email your inquiries about scam email, letters, and phone calls to info@unfoundation.org.

Notification of Changes

The UN Foundation reserves the right to change this Privacy Policy at any time.  If we decide to change our Privacy Policy, we will post those changes to http://www.unfoundation.org/privacy-policy.html or other relevant areas of our Sites or email notice of those changes to you at the email address we have on file for you.  If you use any of our Sites after we make notice of any changes available, you will be deemed to have read and agreed to the changes.  If you do not agree to any change to this Privacy Policy, you should stop using our Sites and request removal of your information from our databases.
