Rice Endorses Overseas Engagement And Democracy Building

As Morning Edition explores the history of our time, Rachel Martin talks to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about her new book, Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom.

From the podcast’s transcript:

“The reason that we have the current global world order – that we’ve enjoyed and almost taken for granted – is because after WWII the US and its allies tried to build an antidote to what they’d seen in between WWI and WWII. There they’d seen protectionism, beggar-thy-neighbor-trading policies, so they said they’d build an open international trading policy. They had seen fear of the ‘other’, a willingness to be harsh on people just because they were different, and they had seen that authoritarian states were violent states so they said, we’ll support democratic peoples. So this system, built on free markets, free trade, and free peoples, and American protectionism, that’s what got us from the events of WWII, to the extraordinary events of the end of the Cold War, to a system of prosperity and peace for a lot of people, including the United States.” – Condoleezza Rice on her new book, Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom.
