On the day before Earth Day, the UK hit a remarkable milestone — powering the entire region without a single shovelful of coal for the first time since the Industrial Revolution.

This day is made even more remarkable by the fact that even as recently as 2014, the UK was still getting 40% of its energy from coal, Cassie Werber reports for Quartz. Over the last five years, however, Britain has made a concerted effort to wean itself off of coal, with the ultimate target being the closure of all existing coal plants by 2025.
