Facebook, Target and Dell make big promises on climate change to help the White House

Facebook, Target, and Dell join 78 other U.S. companies to sign the White House's "American Business Act on Climate Pledge" today, Mashable reports.

The White House has mobilized 68 more companies to sign its “American Business Act on Climate Pledge,” in an effort to get U.S. businesses to cut emissions and improve the environment.

The new batch of companies, which include Facebook, Dell, GE, HP, Qualcomm and Intel, join the 13 firms that signed the pledge during the summer. The pledge is a White House-led initiative that commits companies to pushing for a strong climate change agreement at the Paris Climate Summit in late November through early December.

By signing the pledge, the companies are promising to take specific actions to lower their own greenhouse gas emissions. Their promises range from investing in low-carbon forms of energy to making their supply chains — the process by which they create and deliver products — more efficient.

…collectively, the companies signing up to support climate action have operations in all 50 states, employ more than 9 million people and represent more than $3 trillion in annual revenue.

This is the first time that any administration has engaged the corporate sector to such a large extent in order to build momentum toward a global climate agreement. President Obama, speaking to reporters after he met with several CEOs on hand at the White House today, said businesses are in favor of a new climate treaty. “… I just want everybody to understand that American businesses want this to happen as well,” he said. “What they do need is certainty. It’s going to be very hard for them to operate if they don’t know what the rules of the road are. And what we’re trying to do is make sure that everybody is on a fair playing field; everybody is going their part to make sure that we’re saving this planet.”
