EU Leaders Said Due to Discuss Fast-Track Climate-Deal Approval

EU President Donald Tusk plans to raise the option of a fast-tracked ratification of the Paris Agreement by the European Union, Bloomberg Markets reports.

EU President Donald Tusk will raise the option of a fast-tracked ratification of the Paris Agreement by the European Union at a meeting later this week, Ewa Krukowska reports for Bloomberg Markets.

Tusk is expected to discuss this accelerated approval process during a meeting in Bratislava on September 16, say two close sources. The United Kingdom is not expected to join the summit, which will discuss the future of the region in light of the Brexit referendum.

The sources said that quick ratification of the climate agreement by the European Union “would require unanimous tacit or explicit consent by ministers of the bloc’s 28 member states.” As Krukowska reports, “This accelerated procedure could be finished as soon as next month, putting the EU in a position to trigger the entry into force of the landmark climate-protection deal without having to wait for lengthy sign-off procedures by individual member states.”
